It's just emerged that the Premier took the decision to accept the detainees from Guantanamo Bay without seeking the permission of the UK first.
I'm speechless.
The Premier didn't see the need to consult the UK on this? Not only is this clearly a foreign policy issue, presumably by giving the men Bermudian status, they would also gain the the right to travel to the UK and Europe. And the Premier didn't think the UK would have something to say about that?
For all his many faults, the Premier is not a stupid man, so I find it hard to believe this was simply an oversight. But equally, I can't believe he's trying to manufacture a confrontation with the UK about our "colonial" relationship, given that I suspect a substantial number of Bermudians will oppose giving the men the right to settle here.
It's baffling.
